As a traveling photographer in Boynton Beach, Florida, one of my favorite sessions to photograph is the one-year-old cake smash session. This is such a great milestone to capture, so if you skip the 3, 6 or 9 month old sessions, make sure you don’t skip the one-year-old-cake smash session! They’re too much fun!

These can be sweet and simple with minimal props or totally creative with elaborate set-ups! I tend to like them somewhere in the middle. Too many decorations and I feel like it takes away from the child and that’s the last thing we want.

The best part of my one-year-old cake smash session is that I come to you! I bring my studio with professional lighting, seamless paper for easy clean up and some props, such as a banner, floor decorations and a cake stand. I have parents get the balloons if they want to include them and of course the cake (due to potential allergies).

We usually start out with one outfit and get some cute shots of your one-year old, then I have moms switch outfits for the cake smash part. It creates a fun storyline when done this way.

My most recent cake smash session was with Kaleesi, shown above. She was such a happy, smiley girl and so fun to photograph! Mom said she liked to squish things in her hands, so I made sure to capture her doing just that.

As far as eating the cake, she didn’t seem too interested in that part. She tasted the frosting, but I think she enjoying playing with it more.

At this age, some one-year olds cry, some get in there and cover themselves from head to toe in frosting and some proceed to demolish the cake. It’s all part of the fun of a one-year old cake smash session!
